I was able to make a couple Gyotakus of this Rockfish we painted for the Coastal Style Magazine article titled, “The Art of the Catch”

My great friend and Captain of Fishpit Charters, Todd Bellamy, caught this so we could have the iconic Maryland Rockfish to Gyotaku for the magazine. Just like how Eastern Shore Gyotaku started, this is a product of quiet determination and communal collaboration. For me, this piece reminds me of all the help I’ve received along the way. When I started out, I just wanted another reason to enjoy the solace of being on the water and painting. I never thought the real restoration would come from the support and connections from so many people I would’ve never had the chance to meet if it weren’t for Gyotaku.

This has been a technical piece to put together. From coordinating logistics between getting a fresh fish from Todd, setting up the photoshoot at the Center for Entrepreneurship, to the process of painting, pressing, and detailing this Gyotaku to completion. Communication is key, and this Rockfish Gyotaku is my way of communicating my heart’s appreciation to everyone who’s helped and inspired me along the way.
