Description

This is an Original Porgy Gyotaku that we caught off the reefs in the Caribbean Sea during our trip to Belize. For me, this was a fishing mission I dreamt of and hoped for, for a very long time. Captain Justin and first mate Wolsee knew my fishing background and knew that I totally understood that fishing is no guarantee of catching. I was just glad the wind cooperated to allow us to get on that beautiful blue water.

We cast netted for our baitfish, just like we do at home in Maryland, and hand lined drop shot rigs in 15-20ft of water around reefs. The guys even took extra attention to where they dropped anchor to protect the corals.
Low expectations, positive vibes, and appreciations for the simple things and the scenery landed us multiple 5gal buckets of Snapper, Porgies, and other perfect plate sized fish.  Plenty for friends and family. We were staying at Coco Plum Island and the chef made ceviche and the Snapper several different ways for dinner for everyone.
The cool thing was that nothing went to waste, the story of this Belizean dream can live on, and any scraps and carcasses that were left were returned to the cycle and fed the Tarpons, Nurse Sharks, & Rays.

I got to fish like the locals, learn more about the changing landscape of the islands and reefs, and I brought back some pretty fantastic memories to paint.
I’m just as excited for this to remind someone of a memorable moment, as I am about having a great day of catching…and eating 😉
