Description
This Speck was caught out of Wenona Maryland from my kayak on June 2nd, 2025. Once I got home, I made a small, limited batch of initial black pressings from it before I rinsed it off and prepped it for the plate. A benefit of Gyotaku is that I can revisit and add color to those initial rubbings.
On December 28th, 2025, over the Christmas break while I was visiting family in Severna Park, I finally got around to detailing and layering those colors to bring the rest of this vivid summer memory back to life.
I know I’m not the greatest angler and far from a fish whisperer, so catching healthy class Speckled Trout like this isn’t always a sure thing even though they’re one of my preferred species to put on the plate and paper. So, to catch one of this size made it an easy decision to turn into several Gyotakus.
This one reminds me of the cycles of the Shore, good time humid and buggy memories of early summer nights spent soaking in the saltwater, and then the stalling winters that move me to different methods to scratch my itch to be on or near the water. Spending the time musing about how to weave the colors, shades, and glimmers together to bring justice to the true beauty of this particular Speck is all it takes to get me one day closer to catching another.
